Shadow of the Bear

Shadow of the Bear

Welcome to the enchanting view of the Shadow of the Bear! Nestled between Cashiers and Highlands along Highway 64, the Rhodes Big View Overlook is the prime spot to witness this mesmerizing natural spectacle.

Planning Your Visit:
Visiting during the autumn? You’re in for a treat as the Shadow of the Bear makes its grand appearance! For roughly 30 minutes each day, starting mid-October, the setting sun plays with the mountains and foliage to create a captivating bear-shaped shadow. This unique display has made the highway a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

Nick Breedlove, the head of Jackson County Tourism Development Authority, shares the excitement and mystery that surrounds this phenomenon. "It's a unique experience, exclusive to our area. The bear shadow, coupled with the beautiful autumn colors, creates a breathtaking scene."

With an elevation of 4,930 feet, Whiteside Mountain serves as the perfect canvas for this natural art. However, space at the Rhodes Big View Overlook is limited, so make sure to arrive early to secure your spot and enjoy the show.

When to Visit: The shadow elegantly forms between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m., given clear skies, between mid-October and early November, as well as from mid-February to early March. These later dates tend to be less crowded.

A Little Insider Tip: "The bear is quite particular about its showtime," Breedlove chuckles. "Ensure you're there by 5 p.m. to catch the full transformation. It starts small, a mere dot, and gradually expands into the bear shape, offering a magical experience."

Whether you're a leaf peeper, a photography enthusiast, or just someone in search of a unique natural display, the Shadow of the Bear is a must-see. So, pack your bags, hit the road, and get ready to witness the magic of the mountains!

Getting There:
From Cashiers: Kick off your journey at the traffic light where Highway 64 meets NC 107. Head west on Highway 64, towards Highlands, and in just about 4.3 miles, you’ll find the overlook to your left. Keep an eye out, as it’s an unmarked gem! If you spot the Whiteside Mountain Trail entrance sign, you've just passed it.

From Highlands: Set your course eastward on Highway 64, and after a 5-mile scenic drive, just past the Whiteside Mountain Trail sign and as you cross into Jackson County, the overlook will welcome you on the right.

Safety Tips: Utilize the spacious pull-off area across the road for parking. Please be extra careful while parking, crossing the road, and soaking in the view. Exiting safely is key!
